Threads are new topics, messages would be any posts on threads in the section. These can either show alerts on the forum (a red icon will appear in your user icon and be accessible via links in the Alert view), or you can have an email sent to the account you used when registering.

The forum allows polls, and you can follow any thread to receive email alerts. So, a poll could be created, or proposal put out for coaches to weigh in on, and you will get notifications when there is activity.
